Sustainability and Conservation
Recommended Ages 8-11
The desire to help wildlife has positive long-term effects on the environment. Welcoming nature into your yard can make huge strides when it comes to animal conservation.
Birds, Bats and Bees play an essential role in maintaining healthy and resilient ecosystems – they help to pollinate plants, disperse seeds and control insects. When animal populations are thriving, communities also benefit. By studying and protecting them, we can understand the overall health of our ecosystems and the environment.
The Community Builders kids camp provides a fun, active, hands-on experience that builds confidence with tools while encouraging discussion about sustainability and nature.
Day 1 - Monday
Bird Houses - woodworking skills
Bird houses provides a safe and secure nesting site for cavity-nesting birds, especially in areas where natural cavities are scarce due to habitat loss. Kids will use a variety of tools in the wood shop including saws, drills and sanders to create a bird house of their own design.
Day 2 - Tuesday
Bird Feeder - 3D printing skills
By simply putting up a feeder by your home, you can help with local sustainability efforts, improve bird health and populations. Kids will learn to design in Tinkercad and model a bird feeder that they can 3d print and bring home.
Day 3 - Wednesday
Bat House - Laser cutting skills
Bat houses can help reduce pest populations in yards and gardens by attracting bats to the area. Bat houses offer a safe and secure environment for bats to roost during the day and raise their young. Kids will learn design skills and will use a laser cutter to cut out each part of the bat house for assembly.
Day 4 - Thursday
Bee Hotel - Woodworking skills 2
Bees are crucial for our food supply, biodiversity, and ecosystem health because they are primary pollinators, transferring pollen between plants, which allows plants to reproduce and produce fruits, seeds, and nuts. Without bees, we would loose many of the crops we rely on for food. We will first make a frame then fill it with various materials to create a suitable home for many types of bee's.
Day 5 - Friday
Field Trip to High Park with a picnic.
We will go on a nature walk through High Park and discuss conservation biodiversity while completing a scavenger hunt. Kids will be asked to identify several plants and animals. We will create a small twig boat using natural materials found in nature.
