Music Makers
For a whole week we will study, design and build various types of musical instruments. With a heavy emphasis on safety, we will empower kids with the confidence and skills needed to use tools and equipment in a community makerspace.
Every day we will select a type of musical instrument. We will learn its history and construction methods before designing and building one of our own. We will end the week with a Jam Session that parents are encouraged to spectate.
Instrument Design, Sound Theory using leatherworking tools, hand tools, power tools, laser cutting and 3d printing.
Note: Instruments can be taken home. TTL teaches kids to reduce, re-use, and recycle parts into new projects!
Morning - Ocarina - 3D printing.
We will be exploring the world of 3d printing with a lesson on how 3d printers work, how slicing is done and different materials and tricks to create our first working musical instrument.
Afternoon – Study of the history of music and musical instruments. Design time.
Wooden Xylophone – Woodworking
We start with a shop safety orientation. The kids will select planks, mill, cut, drill and sand the pieces they need to assemble a playable and hopefully tuned instrument by the end of the day.
Stringed instruments – Laser cutting. Woodworking
We will use the precision and speed of the shop lasers to invent and create a stringed instrument.
special attention will be given to the acoustic chamber.
Drums – Woodworking and Leatherworking
We will study different types of drums, select a design and create a drum with a skin and a cajon. We may experiment with drumsticks if we have time in the afternoon.
Morning - Shakers - 3d Printing, Laser cutting and Woodworking.
Using the variety of different tools and techniques learned this week the kids will be encouraged to make a shaker or morracas of sorts.
